Game #62 Preview: Nats vs. Yankees

Game 1 of 3: Friday, June 15, 7:05 EDT, Nationals Park

After sweeping the six-game interleague road trip at Boston and Toronto, the Nats are back home tonight to face the first place New York Yankees. The Nationals send Gio Gonzalez (8-2, 2.35 ERA) to face Phil Hughes (6-5, 4.76 ERA).

What more can be said about Gio? He’s been the Nats best pitcher, and with the stable we have that’s no easy task, rolling to a team high eight wins, a 2.35 ERA and only allowing opposing batters to compile a .502 OPS against. In his last three outings he’s giving up runs more regularly than he was to start the season, but still isn’t getting hit very hard as over that span he’s still only put together a .514 OPS against. His most recent start was one where he got back to form, keeping the Rod Sox in check over 6.1 IP and earning the win. Having spent significant time in the AL, Gio has faced the Yankees numerous times. Unfortunately he hasn’t fared so well against big names in that lineup including Teixeira, Swisher, Jones and Rodriguez.

Phil Hughes has been very up and down all year, sitting on a 4.76 ERA, a 1.338 WHIP and striking out 8.3 per 9 IP. He has looked very good in his last two starts striking out 14 between a CG win over the Tigers and 6.2 IP of 2 run ball against the Mets. He’s had another stretch of success this season similar to this, so we’ll have to see if this is just a peak before the valley or if he can sustain this success. One thing he has done very consistently this year is give up HR’s, to the tune of 2 per every 9 IP. The only Nats who have face Hughes are Zim (0-1) and LaRoche (2-2, HR).
