Game #58 Game Preview: Nats at Red Sox

Game 3 of 3: Sunday, June 10, 1:35 EDT, Fenway Park

Sorry for the lack of a preview yesterday, I was overcome by events. Yesterday turned out to be another great day for the Nationals as Gio dominated for his 8th win and Clippard secured his 7th save as well as another series win for the Nats. With a chance to sweep the Red Sox in Fenway, the Nats send Jordan Zimmermann (3-5, 2.82 ERA) to face Jon Lester (3-4, 4.64 ERA).

Zimmermann had a hot start to the season, but has been fairly up and down in his last four starts. Even though he hasn’t been at his best he’s still managed to go at least 6.0 innings in every game this season. In his most recent outing he only allowed two solo HR’s but received an no-decision as the game turned into a marathon that required every pitcher from both bullpens. In 13PA against current Red Sox, Zimmermann has only allowed one hit while striking out six (including Pedroia twice).

Lester had a rough start to the year and has not been great since his complete game win over Seattle on May 14. In his four starts since that CG he’s given up at least 4 earned runs in three of them, put together a 6.75 ERA, and is allowing opposing batters to hit .337 against him with a .927 OPS. His most recent outing was the most successful of those four, giving up four runs (two earned) over six innings while striking out five. The only starters Lester has faced are Zim, LaRoche and Nady of which I actually had to change the criteria to “who has a hit against Lester”…The answer is Zim and Craig Stammen.

Lineup: Espinosa (2B), Nady (RF), Zimmerman (3B), Morse (DH), LaRoche (1B), Desmond (SS), Moore (LF), Flores (C), Bernadina (CF).

Lineup Notes: Harper is sitting and according to the beat writers was not happy about the news. Morse is once again DH’ing. Lombo and Ankiel are sitting, as they can’t hit lefties.
